Erikan Ekefrey

Erikan Ekefrey’s journey as an artist is a story of family influence, passion, perseverance, and independence. Growing up in Lagos, Nigeria, he was introduced to the world of art at a very young age through his father, a renowned painter. His early exposure to his father’s large-scale works and the experience of painting alongside him provided a strong foundation for his artistic development. As a child, Erikan participated in his father’s creative process by filling in strokes on the canvas. What began as part of his childhood responsibilities became an important early step in shaping his artistic craft.

In 2000, Erikan left home to live independently and began navigating the challenges of establishing himself in the art world. Among those challenges was learning how to recognize and communicate the value of his own work. One pivotal moment came when he showed his paintings to a man who saw far greater value in them than Erikan recognized at the time. The man told him that his artwork was worth more than the price he was offering. Rather than purchasing the paintings, he gave Erikan transportation money, which happened to be equal to the price Erikan had originally set for the artwork. This unexpected gesture of encouragement became a turning point in Erikan’s journey and inspired him to take his artistic career more seriously.

In 2010, Erikan began selling his work to friends, gradually developing a growing network of supporters and collectors. In 2012, he participated in his first international group exhibition in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. During that exhibition, he met his first manager, with whom he worked from 2012 to 2013. Under his management, Erikan exhibited in Abidjan and Rome, Italy. His work was also acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in Equatorial Guinea.

In 2014, Erikan began working with a second manager for the next two years. This partnership opened additional opportunities, including exhibitions in the United States. The exhibitions and relationships developed during these formative years marked the beginning of Erikan’s international career and introduced his work to audiences across multiple continents.

Over the course of his career, Erikan has showcased his paintings in countries including Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Denmark, Italy, South Africa, Senegal, Mali, Togo, Burkina Faso, Kenya, Algeria, Morocco, Belgium, Ghana, Canada, Equatorial Guinea, France, Germany, the United States, England, and China, among others.

In 2016, Erikan reclaimed his independence from art management and began directing his career on his own terms. Since then, he has continued to build his artistic practice independently through his own company and creative studio. This independence has allowed him to make his own decisions about his work, career, and artistic direction while continuing to develop his voice within the contemporary art world.

Erikan’s work is primarily created with acrylic and oil paint on canvas. He is recognized for his vibrant use of color, expressive compositions, and artistic storytelling. Erikan has developed a unique ability to transform expansive cultural narratives and intricate miniature works.

A closer look at Erikan’s work reveals several defining elements of his artistic language. With his miniature works, his use of an aerial perspective creates a bird’s-eye view that transforms the canvas into a larger visual universe.
